ROCKVILLE, MD, June 03, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Montgomery Alliance for Community Giving www.montgomeryalliance.org and the law firm of Shulman Rogers announce another of their series of workshops for Montgomery County's non-profit organizations.
The Duties and Risks of Serving as a Director of a Tax-exempt Organization is scheduled for 8 to 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 15 at the Shulman Rogers Conference Center, 12505 Park Potomac Ave., Sixth Floor, Potomac, MD 20854.
Admission is free for representatives of non-profit agencies and organizations; advance registration is required.
"Directors need to know how to protect themselves from personal liability when serving on a non-profit board and staff members need a better understanding of directors' roles," says Montgomery Alliance President Harriet Guttenberg. "In a changing, tightening economy, many non-profits operate in a business model that is challenging and unfamiliar. It's part of Montgomery Alliance's mission to help local agencies with education and information, as well as funding."
The program will be presented by attorneys with the firm of Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy and Ecker. Presenters will discuss the Internal Revenue Service's increased focus on non-profit governance and directors' responsibilities and available safeguards to avoid personal liability when serving on a non-profit board. The workshop is an opportunity for both board and staff members of non-profits to more clearly understand each other's roles and limitations.
Montgomery Alliance plans additional programs on other issues to assist non-profit organizations, including writing successful proposals and specialized legal concerns.
