Identify Defective Drywall with Handheld XRF Analyzer
Quickshot XRF offers handheld x-ray fluorescence to determine if drywall is acceptable or defective by detecting strontium levels in drywall. High Strontium levels are an indicator of Chinese drywall; which can create health and building problems.
JOPPA, MD, January 30, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In response to a growing need to determine if drywall is defective or acceptable Quickshot XRF announced the release of a new software package for their popular Handheld XRF Analyzer. Based on software for detecting hazardous substances (lead, cadmium, etc); the Handheld XRF's new software package will detect Strontium (Sr) content in drywall. Strontium levels have been determined as a primary indicator of whether a drywall piece is acceptable or defective. In as little as five seconds the Quickshot XRF Analyzer will provide Strontium content in parts-per-million levels that can be used as a pass/fail approach.
The drywall dilemma began in the late 2000's when construction companies utilized Chinese drywall to build new homes and apartment buildings through the United States. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received complaints from over thirty states about serious health issues occuring along with complaints of foul odors and noticeable corrosion of metal components within buildings. Upon investigation, the CPSC and various state health departments soon linked the issues to defective drywall.
The first step in fixing the problem was to learn how to accurately identify defective drywall. Research on various test methods showed that x-ray fluorescence (XRF) is an acceptable method of determining Strontium content; which is an indicator of where drywall was sourced. Benefits that Quickshot XRF Analyzers offer are speed of measurement (as fast as five seconds for initial results) and a nondestructive test method.
