Charter Captain and Blue-Water Sailor Charterer Explains Guidelines of Sailboat Chartering
Bigger isn't always better; Thomas Harris discusses features and guidelines about chartering a sailboat

KEY WEST, FL, March 23, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Thomas Harris, captain of L'Espirit Libre II, a sailing charter yacht in the Florida Keys was recently interviewed. He answered questions about what to look for when chartering.
Thomas talked first about the size of the boat. "Many people think bigger is better; not always true. A long classic boat, Herreschoff-type, is gorgeous, but tiny inside. An old Morgan Outislander is cavernous inside, but rather tired outside. Determine how much room you want; a bunk per person or a double bunk. Keep in mind that this is a boat that is likely to roll even at anchor. How much stowage do you require? Do you need a separate head/shower? What about common spaces such as the main salon and galley? Think about the weather; you may want more storage in cooler climates. Remember, the overall length of the boat is not a determinant of interior space."
Thomas talked about different kinds of boats including Hunters, Beneteaus and Jeanneaus. "These are very acceptable for chartering, with lots of room, good sailing abilities, huge cockpits and very functional."
The captain also said to determine in advance if other charter parties other than your own would be aboard at the same time to prevent some of the most unfortunate misunderstandings. Also, check out the menu to see what kind of food and beverages they have available.
Another very important issue is the captain and crew. "You are more likely to be able to determine if the captain and crew are responsible, friendly and personable through testimonials of previous charters if they are owners. The "pick-up captain" who rents his services to large agencies has little at stake. They are doing this gig until they can find a permanent position on a mega or vintage yacht."
The final point Thomas made was "With a crewed charter, you will not have to do anything; provisioning, cooking, cleaning, anchoring or sailing. Some people look forward to participating some; some captains prefer to only have their crew doing these jobs and will not allow anyone else to take the helm or tend the BBQ.
