Susan Lark, MD Encourages a Holiday "Detox" Plan
Susan Lark, MD, noted medical researcher and women's health practitioner, encourages all women to engage in a post-holiday liver detoxification program.

POTOMAC, MD, January 18, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Susan Lark, MD, noted medical researcher and women's health practitioner, encourages all women to engage in a post-holiday liver detoxification program.

According to Dr. Lark, "Your liver is one of your most important—and most ignored—organs. It has so many critical jobs, such as metabolizing fats, carbohydrates and proteins; manufacturing and balancing your hormones; and detoxifying and eliminating poisonous wastes and byproducts. Unfortunately, modern life makes things much harder for our livers because we're constantly exposed to chemicals that our livers were never designed to handle, such as fumes leaking from carpets, upholstery, insulation, refrigerators, and air conditioners, as well as medications, drugs, cosmetics, and poor food choices."

Ignoring the health of your liver can have a serious effect on your health. If your liver gradually loses its ability to break down and eliminate toxins, they begin accumulating in your liver's cells, setting the liver up for an inflammatory disease such as hepatitis. Other symptoms may include skin problems; gastrointestinal issues; vaginal, urinary tract, and kidney infections; fatigue; bloating; weight gain; and brain fog.

Here are Dr. Lark's recommendations for a post-holiday detox:

1. Drink more purified water.

2. Eat a predominantly vegetarian. organic diet, with emphasis on raw and steamed foods. Let the focus of your diet center on healthy, organic whole foods—salads, steamed vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and lots of fiber to help move toxins through your colon. Make these types of dietary changes gradually and gently. That way, detox will occur gradually and gently.

3. Avoid red meat, fatty foods, refined white sugar, and white flour, which generate toxic residues that the liver must neutralize. Also give up alcohol, wheat and dairy products, and caffeine. If you're a coffee lover, try replacing your daily java with Teeccino and herbal teas.

4. Try a 1-day fast once a quarter. Tyr this modified fast to help you boost the clearance of toxins from your liver while maintaining your usual daily routine. Eat two or three light meals a day consisting of fresh organic vegetable juices (celery, carrot, beet, beet greens, parsley, cucumber, spinach, garlic, and/or wheatgrass), low-fat and low-sodium vegetable broths, herbal teas, uncooked or lightly steamed organic vegetables, and thoroughly-cooked organic starches, grains, and legumes.

5. Take these liver-regenerating supplements: 25-100 mg of vitamin B complex per day; 2 tablespoons of lecithin granules stirred into 4 ounces of water, once a day; 300-600 mg of N-acetyl cysteine once or twice a day; and 525 mg of milk thistle (containing 80 percent silymarin) once per day.

"While there's not much you can do to reduce your exposure to fumes in the air and other environmental hazards, there are many other ways you can 'love your liver' and provide it with the detox it deserves," says Dr. Lark. "Plus, after all those inevitable holiday indulgences, by January, your liver is definitely ready for a good cleansing."
